About

Welcome to Lessons of Herstory. I am her, an African woman raised in America. This blog in it’s current form is my way of connecting my experiences—past and present— with the stories, experiences, and lessons of black womanity at large. At a time where there are so many attempts to silence and subjugate our voice, I find myself ever more compelled to write.

To think deeper, to be a bridge-builder and advocate within womanity at large, specifically for us. I was after alll, a dark hued child. Wondering why the world hated me so. This page is for that little, beautiful dark skinned girl who is googling, wondering why. I want to explain to her why she is a lightning rod for the world’s insecurities.

More importantly, how to continue to elevate herself beyond the limiting societal and cultural expectations which have thrust upon women like us, just for having been born.

I am her. Am I my sister’s keeper? None is, for she lives free. I am elder, like in the traditions of old. A story teller, fact checker, poetry writer. Welcome to my home, please take your shoes off and respect the space. We learn from each other here, we respect ourselves and our heritage here. We spread no malice and just as equally, we are no one’s door mat. All ideas will be examined and questioned because we do not take for granted the good will of others who have proven their enmity for us.

Lastly, a word of peace and grace for my true sistahs: May all the best of life find you in every moment, may you be eternally at peace with your inner world, may all that troubles you be recognized and dealt with, and may your enemies become impotent in all manners.
